A very warm welcome awaits you at Windrush. The food is delicious and is prepared using fresh local ingredients wherever possible. For your added comfort Windrush is a non-smoking establishment.

The house is situated in the South Mainland of Shetland in the picturesque rural community of Cunningsburgh, just 10 miles from the capital Lerwick, and 15 miles from the main airport at Sumburgh. The house is well appointed, a mile from the main A970, overlooking Aithsvoe with sea views out to Mousa, surrounded by meadowland full of wild flowers and bird life. Curlews and oyster catchers abound.

If you are looking for a place to relax, within easy reach of Lerwick and other tourist attractions, this is the place for you. Why not use Windrush as a base for exploring the mainland of Shetland

Facilities Offered

The guest accommodation is on the ground floor of the house and has a ramped entrance to facilitate access for people with mobility difficulties.

Meals are usually served in the upstairs dining room but can be provided downstairs in the conservatory if required.

The shower facilities are level access with seat and rails provided. Both bedrooms have TVs, clock radios, and hairdryers Guests are able to make full use of the utility room including fridge, washing machine and dryer.

Meals
Breakfast

Breakfast is a veritable feast with fruit, cereals, and yoghurt to start with followed by a choice of traditional bacon and eggs etc or why not try some local fish for a change. Then round the whole meal off with Toast and home made preserves.

Evening meal

A three course evening meal is available on request.

A packed lunch is available on request.

Directions
From Sumburgh Airport

Take the main road A970 to Lerwick for approximately 14 miles. After descending the cliff road from Sandwick to Cunningsburgh take the first turn to the right, signed to MAIL. Follow the road round, (approx 1 mile) passed the right turn to the pier and the left turn to A970. After crossing the small bridge you will see 2 houses, Barbara Isbister Knitwear is on the left and the two storey house opposite is Windrush B&B

From Lerwick Ferry Terminal

Turn right out of the docks onto the main road North A970 to Scalloway and Brae. After approximately 1.5 miles take the left turn marked to Scalloway. Take the first turn left and follow the road round then takng the first right turn at the T junction onto the main A970 road South to Sumburgh.

After 8 miles you will arrive in Cunningsburgh. Just before the North Bridge Stores and Adamson's Builders (on the right set back off the road) you will see a sign to Barbara Isbister Knitwear. Take the next left marked to Gord and Windrush. At the T junction, take the right turn marked to Barbara Isbister Knitwear and B&B. Immediately after theleft turn marked to Longwell you will see Windrush B&B which is the 2 storey house opposite the knitwear shop.

Location

The South Mainland has some of the most rugged and dramatic scenery in Shetland and the fertile meadows provide ideal sites for seeing the wild flowers and bird and other wildlife. Below are brief details of some of the places of particular interest.For further details see the web links.

Sumburgh Head

RSPB nature Reserve - Here on the cliffs you can see Puffins (Taamie Nories),Guillemots,Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Shags
Observation point for Seals, humpback, Minke and Killer whales and Porpoises

Old Scatness

Recent Archaeological dig has revealed an iron age village

Spiggie

Spiggie Loch: Trout fishing
RSPB reserve - in the summer you can see arctic terns and great skuas in Autumn hundreds of migrating whooper swans and greylag geese pass through Spiggie Beach: long sandy beach ideal for swimming.

St Ninian's Isle

A Tombolo of sand links St Ninian's to the mainland at Bigton. This is the largest in Europe. Made famous in 1958 when a local schoolboy found treasure during an archaological dig at the Celtic Chapel. This can currently be seen in the new musem in Lerwick

Sandwick

Hoswick Visitor Centre including radio exhibition and cafe Knitwear factory and shop Swimming pool Sandsayre - waiting room for Mousa Ferry

Mousa

Daily boat trips to explore the island and see the birds and other wildlife. Mousa sound is a good place to see Harbour porpoises

Mousa Broch is the best surviving example of a 2,000 year old iron age tower

Large colony of Common and Grey seals bask in the lagoon on the east side of the island

The midnight trip to see the Storm Petrels is an unmissable experience
